DESIGN PROCESS: GOD OF GLUTTONY
BACKGROUND
Introducing one of the seven Sins and Gods of Hell from my Underworld Project, GLUTTONY. Gluttony occupies the 4th and 5th circle of hell and rules over the second most amount of territory in hell, behind PRIDE… and you guessed it, he loves to eat! Despite his large and intimidating appearance, Gluttony has a loud, bombastic but friendly and warm personality (when he isn’t hungry). He loves bonding with others over enormous feasts while exchanging laughs and stories and unlike in most circles, Gluttony is guided by his virtuous morals to maintain justice for all citizens. His design is ancient Hindu inspired along with the land that he controls.
SHAPE DESIGN
Although Gluttony is a fierce and powerful ruler, his character has a balance of being intimidating but friendly. To assist with portraying this, I placed an emphasis on shape design and implemented circular shapes to his anatomy and clothing/accessories. This can be viewed in his rotund torso, bubbly shoulder and bicep muscles, necklace, turban nose (or snout) ring and beard loop. The next primarily featured shape for this design are squares and rectangles. My reasoning for also including a lot of these shapes, was to evoke a sense of strength, solidarity and balance. Examples of this are his pants, hoofs and the cloth that hangs over his pants.
COLOUR
Gluttony is quite goofy compared to the other gods of hell, so I chose colours in his clothing to reflect this side of his personality. The pink and purple colours elicit a sense of playfulness for Gluttony which suits the character well. The decision behind his red sash and orange pants will be explained below.
DESIGN INSPIRATION
The design takes a lot of inspiration from Indian/Hindu culture. The orange pants and red sash resemble typical traditional Hindu clothing and the symbol on his front cloth reads ‘Hell’ in Hindi.
The Hindu god of the underworld rides a black bull, so I decided to make Gluttony a black bull himself and gave him a ring in his nose for a Minotaur-like appearance.
A little unrelated but the rope around his gut was inspired by sumo wrestling attire.
STYLE INSPIRATION
I did some subtle style experiments for this piece which involved making certain lines continue and fly all the way out like with the lines from his turban and from the edges of his horns. This was inspired by the character design of Spider-Man 2099, as he has intersecting shoulder and elbow lines that stray off character. Gluttony will also be quite a messy character, always being covered in food and a little unorganised, so this stylistic choice was a fun way to bring out this side of his personality. I also added some random polka dot textures which was also spider verse inspired.
FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS
In future, I’d like to draw Gluttony in a more expressive manner, which shows off his bombastic, friendly and goofy side. Perhaps I could draw him manically feasting as well as him in a grumpy mood because he’s ran out of food. I’d also like to give his gauntlets a more circular shape to really promote his bubbly personality. I believe some more interesting and complex jewelry would would help sell his godlike presence as well.
